Personal Safety
Getting home late
Planned, before you leave — takes two minutes.
Decide the route while you are still somewhere safe.
Choosing between two streets is easy at 9pm and hard at 1am. Pick the longer, busier one now and you will not have to decide anything later.
What to do
- 1Tell one person your arrival timeNot "I am leaving" — a time. Someone who expects you at 12:30 will notice at 12:45. Someone told you left will not.
- 2Charge to a number you can nameKnow what percentage you are leaving with. A phone that dies at the wrong moment is the most common way all of this fails.
- 3Keep one hand and both ears freeNo earphones on the last stretch. Hearing a vehicle slow down behind you is worth more than any app.
- 4Know the two places that are openOn any route home there is usually a petrol pump, a chemist or a hospital gate that never closes. Knowing where they are turns a bad moment into a short walk.
Do not
- Do not take a shortcut you would not take in daylight.
- Do not post that you are on your way home to a public account.
