Cab, auto and ride safety

Before you get in, and while you are in one.

Check the number plate before the car, not after.

The single most common failure is getting into the wrong vehicle. Read the plate against the app, out loud, before you open the door — and never say your own name first.

What to do

  1. 1Make them say your nameAsk "who are you picking up?" rather than "are you here for me?". A driver who has your booking knows the answer; someone who does not will guess wrong.
  2. 2Sit behind the passenger seatDiagonally behind the driver. You can see them, they cannot easily reach you, and both rear doors are usable.
  3. 3Share the trip, and say out loud that you haveEvery ride app has trip sharing. Using it matters; the driver knowing you used it matters more, so send it while they can hear you do it.
  4. 4Watch the route yourself for the first few minutesYou do not need to know the city. If the map on your phone and the direction of travel disagree, say so early and plainly.
  5. 5If something feels wrong, get out at a signalAsk to stop at the next crowded place — a signal, a market, a petrol pump. You do not owe an explanation and you do not need to be polite about it.

Do not

  • Do not wait alone at the pickup point with your phone out and your bag open.
  • Do not accept a ride the driver offers to switch to another vehicle or another driver.
  • Do not fall asleep on a long night ride if you are travelling alone.

Write this down while it is fresh

A note made the same day is treated very differently from one written months later. Keep it yourself — we do not store any of this.

  • A screenshot of the booking, with the plate and the driver name.
  • The time you got in and where.
