Delhi's air quality worsens to AQI of 377 ahead of Diwali

caution

According to The New Indian Express, Delhi's air quality index (AQI) reached 377 on Wednesday, marking its worst level in nearly 10 months. This deterioration is noted as pollution levels approach the 'severe' category, with 22 monitoring stations reporting severe air quality.

The AQI of 377 is the highest since January 20, when it was recorded at 378. The primary pollutant was PM10, which is associated with coarse particulate matter. Forecasts suggest that air quality may decline further, potentially reaching severe levels from November 6 to 7.

This situation highlights the ongoing air quality issues in Delhi, especially as Diwali approaches. Residents should be aware of the health impacts associated with poor air quality and take necessary precautions.

What to do

  • Limit outdoor activities, especially for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
  • Use air purifiers indoors to help reduce exposure to pollutants.
  • Wear masks when going outside to protect against inhaling harmful particles.
  • Stay updated on air quality reports and heed any advisories from local authorities.
  • Consider using public transport or carpooling to reduce emissions from vehicles.
