Delhi's air quality worsens as AQI exceeds 300 ahead of Diwali

caution

According to India Today, Delhi's air quality has significantly declined, with an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 310 recorded at 8.05 am, marking the first instance of 'very poor' air quality this season. The city experienced a layer of haze following a brief period of relief from rain.

Certain areas saw even higher pollution levels, with Jahangirpuri reaching an AQI of 420, classified as 'severe'. Other regions like Rohini and Punjabi Bagh reported AQIs of 399. The Central Pollution Control Board noted that the air quality deteriorated sharply within 24 hours, coinciding with the implementation of new anti-pollution measures.

This situation highlights the importance of monitoring air quality, especially for individuals with respiratory issues or other health concerns. Residents in Delhi should be aware of the increasing pollution levels as Diwali approaches.

What to do

  • Check the daily AQI levels before going outside, especially if you have health concerns.
  • Limit outdoor activities during times of high pollution, particularly in the morning and evening.
  • Consider using air purifiers indoors to improve air quality at home.
  • Wear masks designed for pollution when going outside in poor air quality conditions.
  • Stay informed about local government measures to reduce pollution and participate in community efforts.
